Dr. John Sloan

2018 Speaker Bio

My name is Dr. John Sloan. I’m a family physician and author. I treat frail elderly people in their own homes, and I’ve published two books on the subject of their care: “Protocols in Primary Care Geriatrics” (a textbook) in 1992, and “A Bitter Pill: How the Medical System is Failing the Elderly” in 2009.

My medical practice bringing primary care into the homes of frail elderly people was for many years unique in my community, and has recently inspired others to develop similar approaches to practice.

I’m a Clinical Professor with the Department of Family Practice at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, and over the years have become an expert in care of the frail elderly. I organize medical education, and lecture regularly to physicians, students, and other groups. I consult with Canadian federal agencies, insurers, and providers of care on issues to do with health of the elderly.

These days I’m spending an increasing amount of my time trying to improve the well-being of frail old people by working to create a social movement on their behalf. I want to give them permission to request health care at home and support to make it happen.
